Discovery Park has played its part in Kent’s success story as THE place for business to locate, according to figures from the county’s inward investment agency.

Locate in Kent assisted 46 companies to invest in the county in 2015-16, with the agency close to achieving 1,000 successful investments since it was set up in 1997.

These latest investments led to the county’s investment promotion agency creating or retaining 2,915 jobs in Kent and Medway, meeting its target for 2015-16.

Of the 46 successful investments, 63% were in the high value, high growth sectors of business and financial services, life sciences and ICT, and more than half of all jobs were in these sectors.

Eight of the successful investments were from overseas, with three from the United States, two from Sweden, and the remainder from France, Italy and Austria.

“This was another successful year for Locate in Kent, and it is particularly pleasing that so many of the investments and jobs were in high value, high growth sectors, so further new jobs can be expected in due course,” said David Fitzsimmons, Chairman of Locate in Kent.

Alongside business and financial services and ICT, the high value life sciences sector also proved important, with five successes, three of which were from overseas, including one each from the US, Italy and France.

Mark Dance, Cabinet Member for Economic Development at Kent County Council, and a Board member of Locate in Kent, said: “Life sciences is a crucial sector for Kent and we have benefitted greatly from having modern, flexible premises such as Discovery Park in Sandwich.

“We now have a life science cluster group – Biogateway – up and running, and this will help Kent companies work together and assist in the attraction of more of these companies to Kent and Medway.

Locate in Kent started 2015-16 with 300 active projects in the pipeline, slightly more than last year. There is a lot of interest in the life science and manufacturing sectors with 38 projects each.

Of the projects 104 companies are from overseas, including 40 from the US and 56 from Europe, with each one considering investing in Kent.
