TWO MAJOR ENERGY COMPANIES MOVE IN AND PUSH OCCUPANCY STATUS TO 54 PERCENT

Posted on 03.10.2014

Opening of two major project offices progresses Discovery Park to more than half full.

Discovery Park is celebrating the arrival of its latest tenants as it symbolises that the park is now at 54 percent occupancy. DONG Energy, a world leader in offshore wind, and National Grid, an international electricity and gas company, have both joined the growing tenant community at Europe’s largest science and technology park.

The site had just five tenants when it was taken over by Discovery Park Ltd, a private consortium, two years ago. Since then, it has attracted a host of companies locally, nationally and internationally, helped by its status as the UK’s most successful Enterprise Zone. The arrival of National Grid and DONG Energy brings the number of tenants up to 97.

National Grid decided to open an office at Discovery Park to use as a central hub for a long-term project that they are conducting - Richborough Connection. The project proposes an electricity connection between Richborough and Canterbury needed to join the Nemo Link®, an electricity link between Belgium and the UK, to their existing network. The office will act as a base for the operational team that will progress the project, including technical experts, consultants and a surveyor.

Discovery Park was chosen as it is close to the project, has good travel links and represents value for money generated through its Enterprise Zone status, which affords special rates to businesses.

Steve Self, Richborough Connection Project Manager said: “Discovery Park is a great option for National Grid’s Richborough Connection project office. It’s really important to us to be embedded in the community that we are consulting with and there is the added bonus of it being a cost effective location complete with business support services.”

DONG Energy originate from Denmark, where their head office is based, and are opening the office in Discovery Park to accommodate some of their UK workforce. They chose the site, after investigating other options in Thanet, as it fulfilled their requirements for an exemplary serviced office, close to the London Array, their offshore wind farm.

Benj Sykes, DONG Energy’s offshore wind UK country manager said: “As the global leader in offshore wind energy, we are delighted to be relocating one of our key technical teams to Discovery Park.

“It will provide an ideal base for the eight-strong High Voltage team which provides support to the London Array, the world’s biggest offshore wind farm, in which DONG Energy is a partner. We look forward to building strong working relationships with other businesses in the area.”
