SANDWICH JUNIOR SCHOOL STUDENTS CELEBRATE SCIENCE FICTION WEEK WITH SCIENCE SHOW AT THEIR DISCOVERY

Posted on 27.10.2014

Science was brought to life for pupils at Sandwich Junior School last week (Friday 24 October), when they were treated to a science show from science education specialist John Coad at Discovery Park in Sandwich.

The Awe and Wonder show marked the end of the school’s Science Fiction Week, a themed week which the school organises each year. 200 pupils and teaching staff dressed up as science fiction characters to suit the occasion.

Head teacher Sheilagh Roberts said, “Each year we organise a themed week to complement what our pupils are learning. Running Science Fiction Week across both our permanent and temporary sites, this year’s theme was incredibly successful and gave us a creative way for the children to access the curriculum and really get them excited about learning science. It’s been integrated in everything from maths lessons to English and beyond and while we are here at Discovery Park, it gave us a suitable scientific environment to base some of our activities.”

The temporary school has been based at the science and technology park for the past two weeks after five of its classrooms and the library flooded. In addition, some of the companies based at Discovery Park have run additional sessions for the children which has seen everything from rockets being set off in lessons to out-of-this-world space shows.

Kimberley Anderson, project manager said, “Working together with our tenants, science experts, and of course the school itself, we wanted to provide the ultimate science experience for the young students on site. The children’s reaction speaks for itself - they were absolutely delighted and we are too.”

To celebrate the culmination of Science Fiction Week and the success of their temporary school, the whole school came together to end the week with a group sing-along to the song ‘Star Trekking across the Universe’!
