The UK Cyber Essentials Scheme

In July, staff from Canterbury Christ Church University hosted a workshop on the UK Cyber Essentials Scheme, in collaboration with SME companies based at Discovery Park in Sandwich, Kent.

This pilot knowledge exchange activity was co-ordinated by a team led by Angela Gill from RED, and Reza Mousoli from CCU’s School of Law, Criminal Justice and Computing.

The UK Cyber Essentials Scheme was devised by CESG (Communications-Electronics Security Group), the information security arm of GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters) at Cheltenham. It is accredited by CREST and IASME, two of the national bodies for information security assurance.

Open source Crimeware is widely available on the internet and attacks are becoming more sophisticated. HM Cyber Essentials Scheme provides basic hygiene measures that all types of SMEs can implement to protect vital information assets.Complying with HM Government Cyber Essential’s practical measures can ensure the removal of most of these daily threats and increase consumers’ trust.

It is part of ongoing work by ministers to protect small businesses from cyber attacks - including a new voucher scheme offering grants of up to £5,000 for specialist advice .

This pilot workshop session, organised by staff at CCCU, helped with the five certification controls of the Cyber Essentials scheme, which became a requirement for UK Government procurement contracts after 1 October 2014. These controls are:

*Boundary firewall.
*Secure configuration.
*Access control.
*Malware protection.
*Patch management.

The participants received a certificate of attendance and the workshop provided the relevant knowledge and skills to enable businesses to apply for certification to Cyber Essentials.
