Come along to our Toastmasters meetings at Discovery Park House

Do your new year’s resolutions include personal development, such as improving communication skills or confidence levels? Professional development, such as presentation, leadership and evaluation skills? Or are you looking for new networking opportunities?

Since 1924, Toastmasters International has been providing a supportive environment in which members develop their communication and leadership skills. Through its worldwide network of clubs, Toastmasters helps more than 300,000 men and women from all backgrounds build their competence in communication so they can gain the confidence to lead others.

The Toasted Sandwich is a Toastmasters club that meets weekly in Discovery Park House. Our membership is open to all, and we currently have around 20 members – including on and off-site employees and industrial placement students. We meet on Wednesdays, 12-1pm, and welcome guests to see what we have to offer.

Each meeting follows a similar format: prepared speeches, impromptu speaking, and evaluations.

Prepared speeches are delivered by members working towards communication projects. These may be focused on a specific aspect of presentation, such as speech structure, body language or vocal variety; or advanced projects such as technical presentations.

Impromptu speaking develops the skill of thinking on your feet – useful practice for speaking up in meetings or responding to questions. A topic is chosen, and members are invited to speak for 1-2 minutes on the subject.

Feedback – including commends and recommends – is provided by speech evaluators and technicians. This regular feedback allows members to practice and develop their communication skills over time.

Leadership skills can be developed in a variety of ways: taking on roles in meetings, mentoring, and organising events such as contests. Advanced projects include serving as a club officer, assuming area or district responsibilities, and completing the High Performance Leadership programme.

If you would like to find out more, or visit a meeting, please get in touch! You can contact us via our club website ( or follow us on Twitter (@TM_Sandwich) for regular news and presentation tips.
